Bio - Joanna Fowles

Joanna Fowles’ practice is situated within a minimal and abstract geometric aesthetic informed by theories of circular design. Joanna’s works extract colour from sourced natural materials to make place-responsive artworks and installations through mediums of dye, screenprint and paint. She combines minimal expression to natural materials creating works that invite reflection on our perception of local materials from urban foraged, post-consumer materials and waste resources.

Joanna studied at Chelsea College of the Arts, London (Bachelor of Arts Hons 1st Class 2008-2011) followed by a practice-based research degree at University of New South Wales (2019-present).

She has shown her work in solo and group exhibitions including Milan Furniture Fair (2019) and Sydney’s Superlocalstudio (2020).

Recent work titled Plant Chroma Codes pushes boundaries of frequently overlooked local materials from plants and café waste streams to reveal spectrums of hidden colour from plants and post-consumer bio-materials. These unique plant chroma codes form artworks and totems created by meticulously hand-painting and then naturally dyeing onto organic canvas to create a distillation of plant material and place.

Joanna works from her home studio in bushland on the outskirts of Sydney, Australia.
